Summary
1 Corinthians 16:1–4 – The Collection for the Saints
What happens: Paul gives instructions for a weekly offering for the believers in Jerusalem. Each sets aside something on the first day of the week. He plans to send approved men with letters.
What it means: Generous, planned giving reflects God’s care for his people. Mercy and unity cross church and cultural lines. Stewardship is orderly and accountable.
1 Corinthians 16:5–12 – Travel Plans and Fellow Workers
What happens: Paul lays out travel hopes and stays in Ephesus because a wide door is open and there are many opponents. He asks them to welcome Timothy and notes Apollos’s plans.
What it means: God directs opportunities and sets times. Ministry involves teamwork under God’s providence. Courage and patience are needed where doors open and resistance rises.
1 Corinthians 16:13–18 – Final Exhortations and Honor
What happens: Paul says, “Be watchful, stand firm, act like men, be strong. Let all you do be done in love.” He urges them to honor the household of Stephanas and others who labor.
What it means: God calls for strength joined to love. The church should recognize and refresh faithful servants. Love and honor safeguard unity.
1 Corinthians 16:19–24 – Greetings and the Final Word
What happens: Churches in Asia, Aquila and Prisca, and the church in their house send greetings. Paul writes a greeting in his own hand. He warns about loving not the Lord, prays “Our Lord, come,” and ends with grace and love in Christ.
What it means: The church is one family across places. Jesus’ return fuels hope and holy fear. God’s grace and love frame all Christian life.
