Summary
1 Corinthians 7:1–7 – Marriage and Mutual Care
What happens: Paul answers their questions about marriage. Husbands and wives owe each other marital care and should not deprive one another except by agreement for prayer. He acknowledges different gifts, marriage and singleness.
What it means: God honors both marriage and singleness. Love seeks the other’s good. Holiness shapes intimacy as a shared stewardship.
1 Corinthians 7:8–16 – Stay or Leave? Peace and Witness
What happens: To the unmarried and widows, Paul commends self-control and says marriage is good. To married believers, he repeats the Lord’s command not to divorce. If a believer is married to an unbeliever who is willing to stay, remain; if the unbeliever leaves, let it be, for God has called us to peace. A believing spouse may be a means of the other’s salvation.
What it means: God values covenant faithfulness and peace. He is merciful toward hard situations. The home becomes a place of witness and grace.
1 Corinthians 7:17–24 – Remain in Your Calling
What happens: Paul tells each person to live the life the Lord assigned. Circumcision status or slave status does not define worth. Use freedom if available, but remember you are Christ’s servant.
What it means: Identity in Christ outruns social labels. God’s providence meets us where we are. Contentment and faithful presence display trust in God’s sovereignty.
1 Corinthians 7:25–31 – Counsel in the Present Distress
What happens: Regarding the unmarried, Paul gives wise counsel in view of present pressures. He advises staying as you are when possible. The time is short; the world in its present form is passing away.
What it means: Life is brief and mission-focused. God calls us to hold earthly goods with a light grip. Urgency for the kingdom shapes choices.
1 Corinthians 7:32–35 – Undivided Devotion
What happens: Paul explains that singleness can allow undivided devotion to the Lord, while marriage brings divided concerns. He seeks their good, not to trap them, but to help them serve the Lord without distraction.
What it means: God desires wholehearted worship. Both states can honor him, but priorities must be clear. Freedom serves devotion.
1 Corinthians 7:36–40 – Marriage Decisions and Widows
What happens: If a man thinks he should marry, he does not sin; if he stays single, he does well. A widow is free to remarry in the Lord, but Paul says she is happier if she remains as she is, and he believes he has God’s Spirit in this counsel.
What it means: God gives freedom within holy boundaries. The Lord is compassionate and wise, guiding choices by his Word and Spirit. Marriage is honored, and singleness is honored.
