Summary
1 Samuel 3:1–10 – The LORD calls Samuel
What happens: In days when the word of the LORD is rare, Samuel serves under Eli. Three times God calls; Samuel thinks it is Eli. Eli discerns the call and instructs Samuel to answer, “Speak, LORD, for your servant hears.” God comes and calls again.
What it means: God graciously restores His word to a listening heart. Spiritual attentiveness and humble readiness mark true service. God often uses older guidance to help younger servants discern His voice.
1 Samuel 3:11–18 – The hard message for Eli
What happens: God reveals judgment on Eli’s house for the sons’ iniquity and Eli’s failure to restrain them. Samuel fears to tell Eli, but he speaks the whole word. Eli accepts the verdict.
What it means: God’s word is true and searching. Faithfulness means delivering hard truth without trimming it. God holds leaders accountable for tolerating sin. Submission to God’s judgment is right, even when it costs.
1 Samuel 3:19–21 – Samuel established as prophet
What happens: Samuel grows; the LORD is with him and lets none of his words fall to the ground. All Israel knows he is established as a prophet. The LORD appears again at Shiloh and reveals Himself by His word.
What it means: God authenticates His servants by fulfilled words and abiding presence. Revelation through God’s word anchors the community. In an age of scarcity, God raises a faithful messenger to guide His people.
