Summary
1 Timothy 5:1–2 – Treat the Church as Family
What happens: Timothy must not rebuke an older man harshly but appeal as to a father, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, younger women as sisters in all purity.
What it means: God’s household requires respect and purity. Family-like care reflects God’s love and order. Purity protects relationships and witness.
1 Timothy 5:3–16 – Honoring Widows
What happens: Honor true widows who are alone and set their hope on God. Families should care for their own so the church is not burdened. A qualifying list includes age, faithfulness, and good works; younger widows are encouraged to marry and manage homes to avoid slander.
What it means: God’s compassion meets need with wisdom and order. Charity starts with family responsibility, then church support. Holiness includes practical care.
1 Timothy 5:17–25 – Elders, Discipline, and Caution
What happens: Elders who rule well deserve double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching. Do not accept a charge against an elder except on two or three witnesses; rebuke sinning elders openly. Keep these rules without partiality; do not be hasty in laying on hands. Take a little wine for your stomach. Some sins are obvious; others appear later; likewise for good works.
What it means: God is just and impartial; church discipline must be careful and fair. Honor and accountability go together in leadership. Patience and prudence protect the church.
