Summary
Ephesians 1:1–2 – Greeting
What happens: Paul greets the saints in Ephesus who are faithful in Christ Jesus. He blesses them with grace and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
What it means: The church belongs to God and lives by grace and peace. God is Father, and Jesus is Lord. This frames the letter with worship and trust.
Ephesians 1:3–10 – Every Spiritual Blessing in Christ
What happens: Paul blesses God for choosing us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless. In love He predestines us for adoption through Jesus. In Christ we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, and the revelation of God’s plan to unite all things in Christ.
What it means: God’s eternal purpose centers on Christ and His grace. Adoption, redemption, and holiness show God’s love and holiness working together. History moves toward Jesus as Lord over all.
Ephesians 1:11–14 – Inheritance and the Spirit’s Seal
What happens: In Christ we receive an inheritance, having been predestined according to God’s purpose. After hearing and believing the gospel, we are sealed with the Holy Spirit, the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of God’s glory.
What it means: God secures our future and gives the Spirit as a down payment. Salvation is God’s work from start to finish. The aim is God’s glory and our confident hope.
Ephesians 1:15–23 – Prayer for Wisdom and Christ’s Rule
What happens: Paul prays that God would give the Spirit of wisdom and revelation so they know Him. He asks that they grasp the hope of God’s call, the riches of His inheritance, and the greatness of His power. God raises Christ, seats Him above all rule, and gives Him as head over all things to the church, His body.
What it means: Knowing God is the greatest gift and shapes all life. Christ reigns as Lord for the church’s good. God’s power toward believers is resurrection power.
