Summary
Ezekiel 1:1–3 – The setting by the Chebar Canal
What happens: Ezekiel, a priest among the exiles in Babylon, sits by the Chebar Canal. The heavens open and he sees visions of God. The word of the Lord comes to him, and the hand of the Lord rests on him.
What it means: God meets His people even in exile. He takes the initiative to reveal Himself and to commission servants in hard places. This shows God’s sovereignty over nations and His faithfulness to speak when His people suffer.
Ezekiel 1:4–14 – Four living creatures
What happens: A storm wind comes from the north with a great cloud and flashing fire. Four living creatures appear, each with four faces and four wings. They move straight forward without turning, like lightning.
What it means: The living creatures show God’s holy presence and power. Their faces point to comprehensive sight and service under God’s command. God is not a local deity; His glory reaches everywhere.
Ezekiel 1:15–21 – Wheels within wheels
What happens: Beside each creature is a wheel intersecting a wheel, full of eyes. The wheels move in step with the creatures. Wherever the Spirit goes, they go; when the creatures stand, the wheels stand.
What it means: The wheels full of eyes show God’s all-seeing rule. His Spirit directs all movement, and nothing blocks His will. This reveals God’s omniscience and perfect control over history.
Ezekiel 1:22–27 – Expanse, throne, and the human-like figure
What happens: Over the creatures is an expanse like crystal. Above the expanse is a throne like sapphire, and on it is a figure with a human appearance, radiant with fire and brightness.
What it means: God reigns from a real throne over all creation. The human-like appearance hints that God draws near and makes Himself known in ways we can grasp. His holiness burns pure and demands reverence.
Ezekiel 1:28 – The rainbow and Ezekiel’s response
What happens: A brightness like a rainbow surrounds the throne. Seeing the likeness of the glory of the Lord, Ezekiel falls on his face. He hears a voice speaking.
What it means: The rainbow recalls God’s covenant mercy even in judgment. Right worship begins with awe and humility before God’s glory. God’s character is both holy and gracious.
