Summary
Genesis 10:1–5 – Japheth’s descendants
What happens: The sons of Japheth form coastland peoples with their lands, languages, clans, and nations.
What it means: God intends diversity of peoples from one family. Boundaries and languages are part of His wise ordering. Nations develop under God’s oversight.
Genesis 10:6–20 – Ham’s descendants and Nimrod
What happens: Ham’s line includes Cush, Egypt, Put, and Canaan. Nimrod becomes a mighty hunter and founds cities in Shinar and beyond. Canaan’s clans spread through the land.
What it means: Power can build cities and systems, for good or ill. God tracks centers of culture and empire. Human ambition needs God’s moral compass.
Genesis 10:21–31 – Shem’s descendants
What happens: Shem’s line spreads with its own lands and languages. Peleg is noted for the division of the earth. The family lines move toward Abraham’s story.
What it means: History narrows through God’s chosen line. God works through generations to keep His promise. Division does not end God’s plan.
Genesis 10:32 – Summary of nations
What happens: These are the clans of Noah’s sons, by their nations. From these the nations spread on the earth after the flood.
What it means: All peoples share a common origin and stand under God. Ethnic diversity and unity both come from God’s will. Mission to the nations rests on this shared family story.
