Summary
Genesis 2:1–3 – God rests
What happens: God finishes His work and rests on the seventh day. He blesses and makes the day holy.
What it means: Rest is part of God’s design. Worship and trust mark God’s people. Holiness sets time apart for God’s glory and human good.
Genesis 2:4–14 – The garden and rivers
What happens: God forms man from dust and breathes life into him. He plants Eden with every tree pleasant and good for food. The tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil stand in the garden. Four rivers flow out to water the land.
What it means: Life is God’s breath and gift. God provides beauty and abundance. The garden shows God’s presence and care at the center of human life.
Genesis 2:15–17 – The command
What happens: God places the man in the garden to work and keep it. God commands him to eat from every tree except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Disobedience brings death.
What it means: Work is dignified service, not a curse. God’s command sets loving limits. Real freedom lives under God’s wise rule.
Genesis 2:18–25 – Woman and marriage
What happens: God declares it is not good for man to be alone. He forms woman from the man’s rib and brings her to him. They become one flesh and are naked without shame.
What it means: God designs companionship and covenant marriage. Equality and unity mark the first home. God’s gift of intimacy is holy and without shame under His design.
Application
