Summary
Hebrews 2:1–4 – Do Not Drift from the Great Salvation
What happens: Because of the Son’s supremacy, the readers must pay closer attention so they do not drift. If violations under the law received just retribution, neglecting this great salvation is even more serious. God confirms the message by signs, wonders, and gifts of the Spirit.
What it means: God is just and His salvation is weighty. Neglect is spiritual danger; attentiveness is faith’s duty. The Spirit testifies to the gospel’s truth.
Hebrews 2:5–9 – Jesus Crowned with Glory through Suffering
What happens: God subjects the coming world not to angels but to man, quoting Psalm 8. Humanity’s glory seems lost, yet Jesus is made for a little while lower than angels and now crowned with glory because He suffered death, tasting death for everyone.
What it means: In Jesus, God restores human destiny. Christ’s suffering displays God’s mercy and the path to glory. The Son fulfills God’s purpose for humanity.
Hebrews 2:10–18 – Brother, Deliverer, and High Priest
What happens: It is fitting that God perfects the pioneer of salvation through sufferings, bringing many sons to glory. Jesus shares our flesh and blood to destroy the devil and deliver us from the fear of death. He becomes a merciful and faithful high priest, making propitiation and helping the tempted.
What it means: God’s love draws near in the incarnate Son. Jesus defeats death and the devil, showing God’s power and compassion. As our priest, He secures mercy and present help.
Application
- Guard against drift by fixing attention on Christ.
- Take courage: Jesus shared our nature and broke death’s power.
