Summary
Hosea 4:1–3 – The covenant lawsuit
What happens: God brings a charge against Israel: no faithfulness, no loyal love, no knowledge of God. Swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and adultery fill the land, and creation mourns.
What it means: When knowledge of God fades, society decays. God’s justice links worship and ethics, and His creation suffers under human sin.
Hosea 4:4–10 – Corrupt priests, ruined people
What happens: Priests reject knowledge and feed on the people’s sins. God says, “Like people, like priest,” and promises shame and hunger as judgment.
What it means: Leaders shape the people for good or ill. God holds teachers to account and opposes religion that profits from sin instead of calling for repentance.
Hosea 4:11–14 – Idolatry and prostitution
What happens: Wine, lust, and idols lead hearts astray. The people consult wood and sacrifice on high places. God will not single out daughters for punishment because men share the same guilt.
What it means: Idolatry corrupts the whole community. God is just and impartial, and secret sins in leaders defile worship and home alike.
Hosea 4:15–19 – Warning to Judah, ruin for Ephraim
What happens: Judah is warned not to copy Israel’s cult at places like Gilgal or Beth-aven. Ephraim is joined to idols, the wind sweeps them away, and their sacrifices bring shame.
What it means: Compromise spreads if unchecked. God calls His people to separate from false worship and promises that empty religion ends in disgrace.
