Isaiah 42:1–4 – The Servant of the Lord
What happens: God presents His chosen Servant with the Spirit upon Him. The Servant brings justice gently, without breaking bruised reeds or quenching faint wicks, and He perseveres until justice fills the earth.
What it means: God advances justice through His humble, Spirit-empowered Servant. He is compassionate and steadfast, revealing holiness joined to mercy. In Christ this promise comes to fullness.
Isaiah 42:5–9 – Covenant and Light to the Nations
What happens: The Creator calls the Servant in righteousness to be a covenant for the people and a light to the nations, opening blind eyes and freeing prisoners. Former things came to pass; new things now spring forth.
What it means: God’s salvation is global and faithful to promise. He keeps covenant and sends true light that liberates.
Isaiah 42:10–17 – A New Song and Divine Warrior
What happens: Islands sing a new song to the Lord. God keeps silent no longer and cries out like a warrior, laying waste to obstacles and guiding the blind on straight paths. Idol-trusters are put to shame.
What it means: Worship rises when God acts to save. He breaks opposition and faithfully leads the helpless, proving His zeal and compassion.
Isaiah 42:18–25 – Israel’s Blindness and Discipline
What happens: Israel, called to be God’s servant, is blind and deaf. Plunder and fire come because they do not walk in God’s ways or heed His law.
What it means: Privilege without obedience brings discipline. God is just and calls His people back to hearing and trust.
