Summary
Isaiah 8:1–4 – Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz: A Swift Judgment Sign
What happens: Isaiah writes the name Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz, “Speeding to the spoil.” His son’s birth confirms the sign that Syria and Israel will soon be plundered.
What it means: God’s word is precise and timely. He controls the pace of events and proves His warnings true.
Isaiah 8:5–10 – The Flood of Assyria and God With Us
What happens: Because the people reject the gentle waters of Shiloah, the Lord brings the Assyrian flood up to Judah’s neck. Yet the cry “God is with us” rings out against enemy plans.
What it means: Despising God’s quiet provision invites overwhelming force. Still, God’s presence sustains His people and frustrates their foes.
Isaiah 8:11–15 – Fear the Lord, Not Conspiracies
What happens: God warns Isaiah not to fear what the people fear. The Lord must be the dread and the sanctuary. For many, He becomes a stone of stumbling.
What it means: Holy fear rightly fixed on God brings security. Those who trip over Him reveal unbelief, while the faithful find refuge.
Isaiah 8:16–22 – Bind the Testimony; Wait in the Dark
What happens: Isaiah seals the testimony among his disciples and resolves to wait for the Lord. The people turn to mediums, but find distress and darkness.
What it means: When culture rejects God’s word, His people cling to it and wait. Seeking guidance apart from God leads only to deeper night.
