Summary
Job 28:1–11 – The search for hidden treasures
What happens: Job describes miners who dig deep shafts, swing suspended in darkness, turn up ore, and overturn mountains. They dam streams to bring hidden things to light.
What it means: Human skill can uncover creation’s secrets. God gave ingenuity to explore the world. Yet even our best efforts have limits.
Job 28:12–19 – Wisdom’s incomparable value
What happens: Job asks, “Where shall wisdom be found?” It is not in the land of the living or the deeps. Gold, onyx, sapphire, crystal, coral, and pearls cannot purchase it.
What it means: True wisdom exceeds market price and human reach. Possessions cannot buy what hearts most need. God alone gives wisdom.
Job 28:20–27 – God knows the way to wisdom
What happens: Wisdom’s place is hidden from all living. God understands its way. When he fixed the wind’s weight and measured the waters, he saw wisdom, declared it, and searched it out.
What it means: The Creator orders the world by wisdom. He alone fully comprehends reality. Reverence grows as we see his wise design.
Job 28:28 – The fear of the Lord
What happens: God concludes, “Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.”
What it means: Wisdom is relational, not merely intellectual. To fear God and reject evil is the path to understanding. Holiness and worship belong together.
Application
- Pursue wisdom from God, not from wealth or status.
- Practice the fear of the Lord through daily obedience.
- Let creation’s order remind you that God alone sees the whole.
- Turn from evil as the practical outworking of true wisdom.
