Summary
Job 40:1–5 – Job’s first reply
What happens: God asks if a faultfinder will contend with the Almighty. Job lays his hand on his mouth. He will not answer.
What it means: Silence can be holy. Reverence grows when we see God’s greatness. Humility is wisdom.
Job 40:6–14 – Challenge to rule with justice
What happens: From the whirlwind, God asks Job to adorn himself with majesty, judge with equity, and abase the proud if he can. Then God would acknowledge Job’s own right hand can save him.
What it means: Justice belongs to God, not man. We cannot save ourselves by power or wisdom. God alone is worthy to judge the earth.
Job 40:15–24 – Behemoth
What happens: God describes Behemoth, strong and untroubled, first of God’s works, untamable by men.
What it means: God’s creatures display power beyond human control. If we cannot master them, we cannot master God. Fear of the Lord is fitting.
