Summary
John 17:1–5 – Jesus Prays for Glorification
What happens:
Jesus lifts his eyes to heaven and asks the Father to glorify him so he may glorify the Father. He speaks of authority given to him over all people to grant eternal life to those the Father has given him. He defines eternal life as knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ whom he has sent. Jesus concludes by asking the Father to glorify him in his presence with the glory he shared before the world existed.
What it means:
Jesus’ request reveals that his sacrificial death and resurrection will display God’s glory and secure eternal life for believers. Knowing God and Christ is both personal relationship and everlasting existence. His pre-existent glory affirms his divine identity and unity with the Father.
John 17:6–19 – Jesus Prays for His Disciples
What happens:
Jesus declares he has revealed the Father’s name to the ones the Father gave him and guarded them in the Father’s name. None has been lost except the one destined to betray. He prays not for the world but for those who believe in him, asking the Father to keep them safe from evil while living in the world. He consecrates them by the truth of God’s word and sends them into the world as he was sent.
What it means:
Believers are given divine revelation and protection through Christ’s intercession. Sanctification comes through God’s truth, preparing disciples for mission in a hostile environment. Jesus’ sending of his followers parallels his own mission and underscores the continuity of God’s redemptive work through his people.
John 17:20–26 – Jesus Prays for All Believers
What happens:
Jesus extends his prayer to all who will believe in him through his disciples’ message. He asks that they may be one as he and the Father are one, so the world may believe the Father sent him. He prays that they share his glory, are perfected in unity, and see the Father’s love. Jesus expresses his desire that believers be with him and behold his glory, affirming that God’s love fills him and is given to his followers.
What it means:
Unity among believers is essential for the world’s recognition of Christ’s divine mission. Shared glory and mutual love reflect the divine community of Father and Son. The promise of future fellowship with Christ and participation in his glory offers hope and motivates devotion to God’s calling.
