Joshua 1:1–9 – God commands Joshua
What happens: God speaks to Joshua after Moses’ death. He commands Joshua to lead Israel across the Jordan into the land He promises. God repeats that He is with Joshua. Joshua must be strong and courageous, obey the law, and meditate on it day and night to prosper.
What it means: God is faithful to His covenant and raises new leadership to carry it forward. Strength flows from trusting God’s presence and Word. Obedience is the path to success, showing God’s holiness and wisdom.
Joshua 1:10–15 – Orders to the people and eastern tribes
What happens: Joshua orders officers to prepare supplies for crossing in three days. He reminds Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh to help their brothers conquer before returning to their land east of the Jordan.
What it means: God’s people act in unity. Shared responsibility reflects covenant loyalty and love of neighbor. Obedience includes serving beyond personal comfort.
Joshua 1:16–18 – Israel’s pledge of loyalty
What happens: The people affirm Joshua’s authority as they obeyed Moses. They ask the Lord to be with him and commit to punish rebellion. They urge Joshua to be strong and courageous.
What it means: God provides order and leadership for His people. Mutual commitment and accountability protect the community. Courage grows when God’s presence and the people’s support align.
