Summary
Leviticus 12:1–5 – Purification after childbirth
What happens: A woman who gives birth to a son is ceremonially unclean seven days; the boy is circumcised on the eighth day. She then continues in blood purification thirty-three more days. For a daughter the periods are double.
What it means: God links family life to covenant signs and purity rhythms. Childbirth itself is not sin, yet bodily blood flow requires set apart time, teaching reverence for life and for God’s presence.
Leviticus 12:6–8 – Offerings and completion
What happens: When days are complete, the mother brings a burnt offering and a sin offering. If she cannot afford a lamb, two birds are allowed. The priest makes atonement, and she is clean.
What it means: God provides a path of return to worship for every household, rich or poor. Mercy meets ordinary life, keeping both holiness and compassion.
