Summary
Numbers 20:1 – Miriam’s death at Kadesh
What happens: Israel comes to the wilderness of Zin and stays at Kadesh. Miriam dies there and is buried. The narrative turns sober.
What it means: A faithful generation passes as God advances His plan. Loss marks the journey, but God remains. Mortality reminds us to trust God’s enduring promises.
Numbers 20:2–9 – Complaint for water and God’s command
What happens: The people quarrel with Moses over water and accuse him of bringing them to a barren place. Moses and Aaron fall on their faces, and God’s glory appears. God commands Moses to speak to the rock before the people.
What it means: God invites leaders to seek Him when pressure rises. He provides clear instructions that reveal His holiness. The need is real, but unbelief tests God’s patience.
Numbers 20:10–13 – Striking the rock and the consequence
What happens: Moses speaks harshly to the people and strikes the rock twice. Water flows, but God tells Moses and Aaron they will not enter the land because they did not trust Him to uphold His holiness. The place is called Meribah.
What it means: God’s holiness matters more than visible results. Leaders are judged more strictly because they represent God. Unbelief in action can forfeit longed-for gifts.
Numbers 20:14–21 – Edom refuses passage
What happens: Moses asks Edom for passage along the King’s Highway with promises of care. Edom refuses and comes out against Israel with force. Israel turns away.
What it means: Not every door opens, even for God’s people. Peaceable appeals honor God, and avoiding needless conflict shows wisdom. God’s timing will make a way in due course.
Numbers 20:22–29 – Aaron dies and Eleazar succeeds him
What happens: God commands Moses to take Aaron and Eleazar up Mount Hor. Moses strips Aaron of his garments and puts them on Eleazar, and Aaron dies there. Israel mourns for thirty days.
What it means: Priesthood continues even as servants pass. God’s covenant care outlives leaders. Grief and hope walk together under God’s faithful hand.
