Proverbs 13:1–6 – Discipline, Speech, and Protection
What happens: A wise son heeds a father’s instruction; a scoffer ignores rebuke. Good fruit comes from wise words, but violence traps the treacherous. Guarding one’s mouth preserves life. The sluggard craves but gets nothing; the diligent are enriched. Righteousness guards the blameless; wickedness overthrows sinners.

Proverbs 13:7–12 – Wealth, Pride, and Hope Deferred
What happens: Some pretend to be rich yet have nothing; others seem poor yet have great wealth. Wealth can ransom a life, yet the poor avoid threats. Light for the righteous grows, but the lamp of the wicked goes out. Pride breeds strife; wisdom comes with counsel. Quick wealth dwindles; steady gathering increases. Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a fulfilled desire is a tree of life.
What it means: God looks past appearances and measures with truth. Pride divides, but wisdom seeks guidance. Patient stewardship reflects trust in God’s timing. God revives hearts by granting good desires in season.
Proverbs 13:13–19 – Receive the Word, Choose Life
What happens: Despising the word leads to ruin; fearing the command brings reward. The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life. Good sense wins favor; the treacherous walk a hard road. The wise act with knowledge; fools flaunt folly. Poverty and shame come to those who ignore discipline, but honor to those who accept reproof. Desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but fools hate turning from evil.
What it means: God’s commands are life-giving because He is good. Teachability opens the way to honor under God’s care. Folly fights repentance, but wisdom embraces it. God’s path, though sometimes hard, leads to joy.
Proverbs 13:20–25 – Companions, Legacy, and Provision
What happens: Walk with the wise and become wise; a companion of fools suffers harm. Trouble pursues sinners, but the righteous are rewarded. A good man leaves an inheritance to children’s children. The poor’s field can yield much, but injustice sweeps it away. Discipline shows love; neglect harms a child. The righteous eat to satisfaction, but the wicked lack.
What it means: God shapes us through the company we keep. Justice and generosity reflect His heart and secure long good. Loving discipline mirrors God’s fatherly care. God provides for the upright as they walk in His ways.
