Proverbs 22:1–16 – Reputation, Humility, and Training
What happens: A good name is better than great riches. Rich and poor meet together; the Lord makes them all. The prudent see danger and hide; the simple keep going and suffer. Reward comes with humility and fear of the Lord. Train a child in the right way, and he stays in it. The borrower is slave to the lender. Oppressing the poor and flattering the rich both end badly.
What it means: God values character and dignity over wealth. Humility before God brings protection and life. Wise training shapes futures because God uses discipline to form hearts. Exploitation invites God’s justice, while stewardship honors Him.
Proverbs 22:17–21 – The Sayings of the Wise Begin
What happens: The reader is urged to incline the ear, keep words in the heart, and trust in the Lord. The sayings teach certainty and truth so the student can answer correctly.
What it means: Wisdom starts with teachable listening and trust in God. God gives reliable truth that stabilizes life and witness. Learning is covenantal, joining knowledge to faith. God equips His people to speak what is right.
Proverbs 22:22–29 – Justice, Temper, Pledges, and Skill
What happens: Do not rob the poor or crush the afflicted, for God takes their case. Do not befriend a hot-tempered person. Avoid pledging security and moving ancient boundaries. Skilled workers stand before kings.
What it means: God defends the weak and judges predators. Ungoverned anger spreads harm and must be avoided. Respect for limits and contracts reflects God’s order. Excellence under God’s wisdom gains enduring honor.
