Psalms 12 Explained — Help When Flattering Lips Prevail

Voices drip with flattery and double hearts, while the faithful feel swallowed up by boastful tongues. The result is a sharp contrast between man's empty talk and the Lord's purified words, promising rescue for the oppressed.

Summary

Psalm 12:1–4 – Faithless speech What happens: Flattery and lies fill the land; the wicked boast in their own tongues. What it means: Words reveal hearts. Pride uses language to manipulate and harm.

Psalm 12:5 – God’s promise to the needy What happens: God arises to protect the poor and oppressed. What it means: God defends the vulnerable. His compassion moves Him to act.

Psalm 12:6–8 – Pure words and preservation What happens: God’s words are pure and He keeps His people while wickedness roams. What it means: God’s truth is flawless and preserving. Scripture anchors us amid corrupt speech.

Application

  • Reject flattery and speak truth kindly.
  • Hold to God’s promises when lies spread.
  • Advocate for the oppressed with your words.

Bible

1To the chief Musician upon Sheminith, A Psalm of David. Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.

2They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.

3The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things:

4Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?

5For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him.

6The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.

7Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.

8The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.
