Psalm 79:1–4 – Ruin of Jerusalem What happens: Nations defile God’s temple, lay Jerusalem in ruins, and mock His people. The dead lie unburied. What it means: Sin and judgment bring public shame. Lament names the horror before God.
Psalm 79:5–10 – How long? Forgive and deliver What happens: The psalmist asks God to pour wrath on the nations and not remember Israel’s sins forever. He pleads for help for the glory of God’s name. What it means: Appeal to God’s name and mercy is the path to restoration. God’s reputation is tied to His people’s rescue.
Psalm 79:11–13 – Spare and shepherd What happens: He asks God to preserve prisoners and repay taunts. The flock promises thanks forever. What it means: God is Shepherd of a wounded people. Gratitude is the right end of deliverance.
