Summary
Romans 3:1–8 – God’s faithfulness and human unbelief
What happens: Paul asks what advantage the Jew has and answers that they are entrusted with God’s words. Human unfaithfulness does not cancel God’s faithfulness. He rejects the charge that God is unjust to judge or that we should do evil that good may come.
What it means: God remains true though every person is false. His righteousness stands above human schemes. Grace never excuses sin, and God’s justice is right and necessary.
Romans 3:9–20 – All under sin
What happens: Paul concludes that Jews and Gentiles are all under sin. He strings Scripture together to show that none is righteous, none seeks God, and no one does good. The law stops every mouth and holds the whole world accountable. By works of the law no flesh is justified, for the law gives knowledge of sin.
What it means: Universal sin cancels boasting. The law exposes guilt but cannot save. This reveals God’s holiness and our need for a savior, leveling all people before the cross.
Romans 3:21–26 – Justification by faith in Christ
What happens: Now the righteousness of God is revealed apart from the law, though witnessed by the Law and the Prophets. It comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe, for all have sinned and fall short of God’s glory. God justifies freely by grace through the redemption in Christ, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to show his righteousness.
What it means: God provides the righteous status we lack through Jesus’ atoning death. Justice and mercy meet at the cross. Faith unites us to Christ, upholding God’s holiness while forgiving sinners. This is the center of redemption.
Romans 3:27–31 – Boasting excluded, law upheld
What happens: Boasting is excluded by the law of faith. A person is justified by faith apart from works of the law. God is God of Jews and Gentiles, and he justifies both by faith. Faith does not overthrow the law; it upholds it.
What it means: Grace removes pride and unites diverse people in one family. The law’s true goal is fulfilled in Christ and in faith-born obedience. God shows covenant faithfulness to all who believe.
