Daniel 10:1–3 – Mourning for understanding
What happens: In Cyrus’s third year, Daniel receives a message of great conflict. He mourns for three weeks, eating no rich food and using no ointment.
What it means: Hunger for God’s wisdom leads to humble fasting. God invites earnest seeking when the times are hard. Dependence is the doorway to insight.
Daniel 10:4–9 – Vision of the man in linen
What happens: By the Tigris, Daniel sees a glorious man in linen with a face like lightning and a voice like a multitude. The men with him flee in terror. Daniel loses strength and falls into a deep sleep with his face to the ground.
What it means: A glimpse of heaven’s glory undoes human strength. God’s messengers reflect his majesty and holiness. Fear of the Lord leads to reverence and readiness to listen.
Daniel 10:10–14 – Strength given and conflict revealed
What happens: A hand touches Daniel and tells him he is greatly loved. The messenger was delayed twenty-one days by the prince of Persia until Michael helped. He comes to make Daniel understand what will happen to his people in the latter days.
What it means: Unseen spiritual conflict is real, yet God’s purposes stand. God values his people and sends help at the right time. History’s struggles mirror battles in the unseen realm, but God rules both.
Daniel 10:15–21 – Further strengthening and purpose
What happens: Daniel is speechless and weak; he is strengthened by words and touch. The messenger says he must return to fight the prince of Persia, and later the prince of Greece will come. He speaks of the book of truth and Michael’s aid.
What it means: God’s word gives strength to frail people. The future unfolds by God’s written plan. God provides faithful help through his servants to keep his people.
