Summary
Ecclesiastes 10:1–7 – Folly Exposed
What happens: Dead flies spoil fine oil; a little folly outweighs wisdom. A fool’s heart leads him astray and he shows his stupidity by his walk. Folly is set in many high places while the rich sit low.
What it means: Small sins can undo great good. Appearances of power do not prove wisdom. God calls for integrity in small things.
Ecclesiastes 10:8–11 – Risks and Readiness
What happens: Digging pits, breaking walls, quarrying stones, and splitting logs all carry risks. If the iron is blunt, sharpen it; if the snake is not charmed, it bites. Skill and preparation bring success.
What it means: Wise people respect hazards and prepare well. God commends foresight as part of faithful stewardship. Prudence is spiritual, not merely practical.
Ecclesiastes 10:12–15 – Words that Build or Break
What happens: The words of a wise man bring favor, but a fool is consumed by his lips. He multiplies words and reveals his ignorance. His toil wearies him and he cannot even find the way to the city.
What it means: Speech reveals the heart. God loves truthful, careful words that give grace. Proud talk ends in harm.
Ecclesiastes 10:16–20 – Leadership and Self-Control
What happens: Woe to a land with childish leaders who feast in the morning; blessed is the land with disciplined rulers. Laziness causes the roof to sink, and money answers many needs. Do not curse the king even in secret; a bird may carry the voice.
What it means: Character in leaders and citizens matters before God. Diligence and restraint protect a community. God hears what we say; honor authority and keep your tongue.
Application
