Summary
Ecclesiastes 5:1–7 – Worship with Reverence
What happens: The Teacher warns to guard your steps when you go to God’s house. Listen more than you speak. Do not make rash vows, and fulfill what you promise. Many words and dreams reveal folly; fear God.
What it means: God is holy and deserves careful, honest worship. Integrity before God matters more than show. Reverence keeps our words humble and true.
Ecclesiastes 5:8–12 – Profit and Insatiable Wealth
What happens: Oppression and bureaucracy stack up, but a field still serves all. Those who love money never have enough, and abundance brings more eaters. The sleep of a laborer is sweet, but the rich cannot rest.
What it means: Wealth cannot secure justice or peace. God values fairness and simple rest. Greed steals contentment and blinds us to God’s care.
Ecclesiastes 5:13–17 – Riches Lost and Empty Days
What happens: Hoarded riches harm the owner. A bad venture loses wealth, and he has nothing for his child. As he came naked, so he goes. He eats in darkness with vexation and anger.
What it means: Earthly treasure is fragile and cannot follow us into death. God calls us to open-handed stewardship. Clutching wealth erodes the soul.
Ecclesiastes 5:18–20 – Content Joy from God
What happens: The Teacher commends eating, drinking, and enjoying one’s work as a gift from God. When God gives wealth and the power to enjoy it, a person has joy in his toil. He is occupied with gladness of heart.
What it means: Real enjoyment comes from God, not from the size of the account. Gratitude turns work into worship. God’s kindness fills ordinary days with gladness.
