Isaiah 40:1–5 – Comfort and the Way Prepared
What happens: A voice proclaims comfort and forgiveness for Jerusalem. Another voice calls to prepare the way of the Lord, and the glory of the Lord is revealed.
What it means: God initiates comfort after discipline. He comes near to save, and His presence changes the landscape of human hearts.
Isaiah 40:6–8 – Grass Withers, Word Endures
What happens: All flesh is grass and its beauty fades, but the word of our God stands forever.
What it means: Human life and power are brief. God’s promise is permanent and trustworthy.
Isaiah 40:9–11 – Behold Your God, the Shepherd-King
What happens: Zion is told to lift up a strong voice: “Behold your God.” He comes with might and tends His flock like a shepherd.
What it means: God is both powerful and gentle. He rules and He carries, revealing holy love.
Isaiah 40:12–17 – The Incomparable Creator
What happens: God measures seas and skies, needs no counselor, and counts nations as a drop. Lebanon’s forests and beasts cannot suffice for an offering.
What it means: God’s greatness is beyond measure. Worship rises from awe at His wisdom and power.
Isaiah 40:18–20 – Idol-Making Exposed
What happens: Craftsmen shape idols from wood and metal to keep them from tottering.
What it means: Idols are man-made and helpless. Trust belongs to the living Creator, not to objects of our making.
Isaiah 40:21–26 – Ruler of Princes and Stars
What happens: God sits above the circle of the earth and brings princes to nothing. He calls the stars by name and none are missing.
What it means: God governs rulers and galaxies. His providence is exact and tender.
Isaiah 40:27–31 – Strength for the Weary
What happens: Jacob complains that God forgets. Isaiah declares that the everlasting God does not faint and gives power to the weak. Those who wait for the Lord renew strength and soar like eagles.
What it means: Waiting on God is not passive. Hope in His character brings fresh strength, because His mercy does not run out.
