Summary
John 3:1–8 – Nicodemus Visits Jesus by Night
What happens:
Nicodemus, a Pharisee and member of Israel’s ruling council, comes to Jesus under cover of darkness. Jesus tells him that no one can see God’s kingdom without being born again—“born of water and the Spirit.” Nicodemus struggles with the metaphor, and Jesus explains that spiritual birth comes from the Spirit’s mysterious work, like the wind.
What it means:
Entry into God’s kingdom requires a radical, Spirit-wrought transformation, not mere heritage or effort. Spiritual life is a divine gift that transcends human understanding.
John 3:9–15 – Jesus Explains Heavenly Things
What happens:
Jesus rebukes Nicodemus for his lack of understanding despite being a teacher of Israel. He compares earthly and heavenly things, saying that just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up—that everyone who believes may have eternal life.
What it means:
Jesus points to his impending crucifixion as the means of salvation. Belief in the lifted-up Savior brings life to those who trust him.
John 3:16–21 – God’s Love and Judgment
What happens:
Jesus declares that “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son” so that believers would not perish but have eternal life. He contrasts those who believe (coming into the light) with those who reject him (remaining in darkness), explaining that people love darkness because their deeds are evil.
What it means:
Salvation flows from God’s initiative of love in Christ. Faith in Jesus brings illumination, exposing sin and inviting repentance. Rejecting the light reveals a preference for sin and incurs judgment.
Application

- Walk in the light of Jesus, allowing his truth to expose and cleanse areas of darkness in your life
- Rest in God’s overwhelming love demonstrated in giving his Son, responding with gratitude and trust
- Choose faith over fear, knowing that eternal life is offered freely to all who believe in Jesus
