Psalms 136 Explained — His Mercy Endureth For Ever

Psalm 136:1–3 – Give thanks for covenant love What happens: Thanks is given to the Lord, God of gods and Lord of lords, for His steadfast love endures forever. What it means: God’s covenant love is the refrain of faith. Gratitude is our fitting response.


Psalm 136:4–9 – Creation by wisdom What happens: He makes the heavens, earth, and lights, for His love endures forever. What it means: Creation displays faithful love. The world is a gift of grace.


Psalm 136:10–15 – Exodus deliverance What happens: God strikes Egypt’s firstborn and parts the sea to bring Israel through. What it means: Salvation is God’s powerful mercy. He defeats oppressors for His people.


Psalm 136:16–22 – Wilderness care and inheritance What happens: He leads through the desert, defeats kings, and gives land to Israel. What it means: God provides and keeps promises. Inheritance flows from covenant.


Psalm 136:23–26 – Remembered in low estate What happens: He remembers the lowly, rescues, feeds all flesh, and is thanked as God of heaven. What it means: God stoops to care for the needy. His steadfast love is universal and enduring.
