Psalms 75 Explained — God Puts Down One And Lifts Another

The song warns the boastful not to lift up their horn, because the Judge sets the times and pours the cup. This moment matters because it frames history as God's courtroom, where arrogance is humbled and righteousness is upheld in the end.

Summary

Psalm 75:1 – We give thanks What happens: God’s name is near and His wondrous deeds are told. What it means: Gratitude keeps God’s works in view. Worship frames life.

Psalm 75:2–5 – I will judge with equity What happens: God says He sets the time and steadies the pillars of the earth. He warns the proud not to lift their horn. What it means: God governs history and judges fairly. Pride has no future before Him.

Psalm 75:6–8 – Exaltation from God alone What happens: Lifting up does not come from east or west; the Lord puts down one and lifts another; a cup of judgment is in His hand. What it means: Promotion belongs to God. He alone dispenses justice.

Psalm 75:9–10 – Cut off the horns of the wicked What happens: The psalmist vows to praise God as He exalts the righteous and cuts off the wicked. What it means: God defends His people and humbles evil. Praise anticipates His verdict.

Application

  • Thank God that He rules the timing of justice.
  • Humble yourself under God’s hand rather than self-promotion.
  • Trust God to lift the righteous and silence the proud.

Bible

1To the chief Musician, Altaschith, A Psalm or Song of Asaph. Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks: for that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare.

2When I shall receive the congregation I will judge uprightly.

3The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved: I bear up the pillars of it. Selah.

4I said unto the fools, Deal not foolishly: and to the wicked, Lift not up the horn:

5Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck.

6For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.

7But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.

8For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, and the wine is red; it is full of mixture; and he poureth out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall wring them out, and drink them.

9But I will declare for ever; I will sing praises to the God of Jacob.

10All the horns of the wicked also will I cut off; but the horns of the righteous shall be exalted.
