Summary
Revelation 4:1–6a – The throne in heaven
What happens: John is taken in the Spirit to heaven and sees a throne with One seated, shining in beauty like jasper and carnelian. A rainbow surrounds the throne, and twenty-four elders sit on thrones. Flashes of lightning, thunder, and a sea like glass are before God.
What it means: History centers on God’s throne, not earthly power. The rainbow recalls covenant mercy, while thunder shows holy majesty and judgment. Worship begins with seeing God as King.
Revelation 4:6b–11 – Unending worship
What happens: Four living creatures praise God day and night, saying He is holy. Whenever they give glory, the elders fall and worship, casting their crowns and declaring that God created all things.
What it means: All creation exists for God’s glory and by His will. True worship is humble, joyful, and God-centered. God’s holiness and power call us to surrender.
