Summary
Zechariah 3:1–5 – Joshua cleansed and clothed
What happens: Joshua the high priest stands before the angel of the LORD while Satan accuses him. The LORD rebukes Satan and calls Joshua a brand plucked from the fire. Joshua’s filthy garments are removed and he is clothed with pure vestments and a clean turban.
What it means: God justifies the guilty by His mercy. He removes defilement and restores the sinner to serve. Holiness is a gift before it becomes a way of life. The accuser cannot overturn God’s saving choice.
Zechariah 3:6–10 – The Branch and one day of removal
What happens: Joshua is charged to walk in God’s ways and keep His charge. God promises access and rule among His servants. He speaks of His servant, the Branch, and a stone with seven eyes, and He will remove the iniquity of the land in one day. Neighbors will sit under vine and fig tree in peace.
What it means: God links cleansing with calling to obedience. The promised Branch points to God’s chosen ruler and priestly hope. God’s plan centers on a decisive act that removes sin and brings peace. Covenant life ends in rest and fellowship.
