Zechariah 5:1–4 – The flying scroll
What happens: Zechariah sees a large flying scroll that carries a curse. It goes out over the whole land, entering the house of the thief and the one who swears falsely, consuming it.
What it means: God’s word exposes and judges personal sin. His holiness reaches into private spaces. Covenant life requires truth and integrity.
Zechariah 5:5–11 – Wickedness in the ephah
What happens: A woman called Wickedness sits in an ephah. Two winged women lift the ephah and carry it to the land of Shinar to build a house for it.
What it means: God removes systemic evil from His people and confines it to its own place. He is not only cleansing individuals but also purging structures. Holiness means both personal righteousness and a purified community.
Application
- Confess and turn from theft, lies, and all private sins.
- Work to remove structural evil, not just visible symptoms.
- Trust God to cleanse His people so worship and justice can flourish.
